Kadre Gray recognized for prestigious all-encompassing award
2021-01-15

Even in a year where his on-court exploits have been completely sidelined, Laurentian Voyageurs' basketball star Kadre Gray continues to earn accolades.

Earlier this week, U Sports recognized the two-time national player of the year (winner of the Mike Moser Memorial Trophy in both 2017-2018 and 2018-2019) as one of the Top 8 Academic All-Canadians in the country.

Last year (2019-2020) would see Gray eclipse the Laurentian all-time career scoring record, all while moving into second place on the OUA historic list.

In the classroom, the 23 year-old Toronto native cracked the Dean's Honours List with a 9.1 GPA (88%), earning Academic All-Canadian status for a second straight season.

Adding to his ultra impressive resume, Gray served as the vice-chair for the inaugural OUA Black, Biracial and Indigenous (BBI) Task Force, a group tasked with building strategies to increase diversity and representation and drive policy change aimed at removing barriers caused by systemic racism.

In that same vein, Gray helped to co-found ULU (Uluntu, Lungisa, Usawa - Humanity, Justice, Equality) in 2017, an organization that works largely in the Sudbury region with racialized youth, developing support groups, facilitating workshops, raising awareness, as well as promoting advocacy and empowerment.

"I have said this in the past, and will continue to say that Kadre's work ethic is amazing," noted L.U. head coach Shawn Swords in a university issued media release. "He continues to push himself to achieve new goals in the community, in the classroom, and on the court."

"I look forward to seeing what he will be able to do next."

While Laurentian is understanbly proud of all of their varsity student athletes, the truth is that Gray's achievements, across the board, have set a standard that is not easily duplicated.

"Kadre is a prime example and a template for elite student-athletes, all across our country," noted Athletic Director Peter Hellstrom. "He has become a leader not only at Laurentian but in the Sudbury community as well."

"We are truly proud to have Kadre on our campus and forever being a Voyageur."

In lieu of the traditional formal ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, Kadre and the select U Sports group that also includes Markus Thormeyer (swimming - UBC), Jean-Simon Desgagnes (XC - track - Laval), Matt Coolen (track - Dalhousie), Kelsey Wog (swimmer - Manitoba), Marie-Lou Lapointe (swimmer - Montreal), Isabel Sarty (swimmer - Dalhousie) and Sophie de Goede (rugby/basketball - Queen's) will join Governor General Julie Payette for an on-line celebration next month.

Gray is the first Voyageur to receive a Top 8 Academic All-Canadian honour since the awards were first introduced in 2013 by then Governor General David Johnston.
