A first ever OBXL Elite title comes north
2019-03-30
by Randy Pascal

The Sudbury Jam U13 Girls are the bracket busters of the Ontario Basketball Elite League (OBXL).

Despite entering tournament weekend seeded fifth in a ten team bracket, the locals knocked off two of the pre-event favourites in capturing the title earlier this month in Toronto.

The Jam showed the propensity for upsets right from the start, downing the #4 ranked Mississauga crew 44-32 to garner some momentum early on. That combination of heart and skill was front and center in the semi-finals as Sudbury toppled the top-ranked and defending champion Durham City squad by a final count of 60-41.

Despite the emotional drain of their shocking victory, the U13 Jam were still able to overcome an early deficit in the final, battling back to beat Waterloo 39-34 and becoming, in the process, the first ever northern Ontario team to claim an Ontario Basketball Elite League title.

Celebrating this impressive accomplishment were Syla Swords, Mathilde Fleury, Bree Bourget, Madina Jebreen, Mia Yurich, Chelsey Galipeau, Emilie Miller, Ella Bourget, Olivia Tissot, Izzy McKague, Mahtressa Paris, Sophie Alexander, Savannah Swords, Kami Dreger and Ashley Boulard.
