Back to back bronze for Chill 15U Black
2019-03-14
by Randy Pascal

Make it back to back bronze medal performances for the Northern Chill 15U – Black crew.

After entering the Christmas holiday period with a third place showing in Richmond Hill, the team exited the break in similar fashion, reaching the podium at the McGregor Cup – Trillium “E” tournament in Newmarket.

The Chill did not drop a set in topping their pool with morning sweeps over both the Thundercats 14U – Black from Richmond Hill (25-16, 25-20) and the Georgian Bay Vista from Simcoe County (26-24, 25-11).

The locals struggled more than expected in needing three sets to work past the Georgina Riptide – Rage 23-25, 25-17, 15-6 in quarter-final action, but went right to the wire with the gold medal winning Thundercats (15U), beaten 25-19, 19-25, 12-15 in the semis.

With the experience of one bronze medal victory already safely in hand, the Northern Chill 15U Black girls duplicated their previous effort, downing the Georgian Cubs – Koda from Barrie 25-20, 25-15.

“This was a great start to the second half of the season,” said head coach Phil Brown. “The girls' mental game has really improved.” On an individual basis, he noted the work of Brielle Depatie (“showed amazing defense all day, picking up lots of hard driven balls”), Mia Renaud (“made the best of her setting, putting up great balls for her swingers and serving consistently throughout the day”) and Makayla Mirka (“continues to impress with aggressive defense at the net and big middle swings”).

The 2018-2019 edition of the Northern Chill 15U – Black team is comprised of Kayla Presley, Molly Lafantaisie, Anya Dowe, Hayley Bertrand, Roma Cormier, Brielle Depatie, Mia Renaud, Zoe St-Jean, Makayla Mirka, Kaija Grubber, Emma Vaillancourt and Megan Merrylees.
