Voyageurs cheer the Jam on to victory
by Randy Pascal
With a little extra unexpected support, the Sudbury Jam U13 Girls enjoyed a winning weekend recently in Toronto, taking three of their four game
set at the HoopDome in Downsview.
The local girls earned a split on Saturday, upending Hamilton Transway 50-41, but dropping a 50-31 decision to the Durham City Chameleons.
A sweep on Sunday, with victories over both the Tecumseh Saints (41-34) and Mississauga Monarchs (41-31) was pleasing enough, but it wasn't
even the story of the day.
In the midst of their fourth and final game, the Sudbury girls were amazed to suddenly find themselves being cheered on at previously unprecedented
levels, courtesy of the Laurentian Voyageurs men's and women's basketball teams.
Turns out the varsity squads were in Toronto for a weekend double-header of OUA action, and decided to make the impromptu stop prior to leaving for their
trip home. The excitement was palpable, as the Voyageurs stormed the court as the final buzzer sounded, high five'ing the delighted youngsters.
With their 3-1 mark on the weekend, the 13U Jam improved to 8-2 in league play, sitting in third place in Division I standings. The 2018-2019 roster for
the northern reps includes Sophie Alexander, Ashley Boulard, Bree Bourget, Ella Bourget, Kami Dreger, Mathilde Fleury, Chelsea Galipeau, Madina Jebreen,
Isabel McKague, Emilie Miller, Mahtressa Paris, Savvy Swords, Syla Swords, Olivia Tissot and Mia Yurich, as well as coaches Bruce Bourget
and Shelley Swords.
