Impact girls close off a very encouraging summer
2018-09-19
by Randy Pascal

The 2018 North Mississauga Summer Tournament & Festival earlier this month allowed the young women with the GSSC (Greater Sudbury Soccer Club) Impact U13 Girls team to put on display just how much things have progressed since they first assembled back in the spring.

Judging from the results, head coach Joe Snofl and his troops are undoubtedly proud of their year one accomplishments.

A very busy Saturday started off bright and early, as the Impact edged the West Lincoln Warriors from Smithville 2-1. Sydney Coe opened the scoring for the northern crew, with Kiara Levac netting the game-winner, earning her Game MVP honours.

The tables were turned in game two, just a few hours later, as the Impact dropped a 2-1 decision of their own to Hamilton Sparta. Coe would make it two goals in as many games, walking off with MVP accolades in the process.

A third straight nail-biter would see GSSC parents thankful to be able to call it a day as the Sudbury squad edged Mooredale SC 1-0, with Coe handling the offense, Impact keeper Cadyn Goulais recording the clean slate in net, and sweeper Kiana Levac standing tall on the back line.

A Sunday morning semi-final produced even more drama as the Impact and Oakridges were deadlocked in a scoreless draw at the end of regulation time. It would all come down to the dreaded penalty kicks, as the locals emerged with a 1-0 (4-3) victory thanks to tallies from Sophie Oomen, Kiana Levac, Kiara Levac and Brooke Dugas, the latter drilling home the goal that would send her team to the finals.

Unfortunately, a tough start amidst God awful weather conditions torpedoed the Impact, as Hamilton Sparta claimed the championship banner with a 4-0. Sudbury defensive stalwart Kiana Levac picked up the Game MVP award in the team's very last game of the summer.

Rounding out the tournament roster for the GSSC Impact U13 Girls roster were Andrea Begic, Kaja Beljo, Addison Johnstone and Brooke Serre-Gray, as well as three guest players from North Bay - Marcie Cacioglio, Cadyn Goulais and Hannah Beaulieu.

The tournament wrapped up a very first year of competitive soccer for this crew, with the team earning a pair of silver medals in tournament play, and advancing to the semi-finals in Huronia District Soccer League Cup play.

The team will be hosting tryouts again next spring, looking to take the step forward in balancing league play with a few tournaments, and welcomes any 2005-born girls looking to take their game to the next level to join in the fun.
