A silver medal performance for Lam and Watkins at OFSAA
2018-05-11
by Randy Pascal

Add the names of the Marymount Academy pairing of Angelina Lam and Mackenzie Watkins to the list of local athletes who have managed to return from the OFSAA Badminton Championships with a little extra hardware in hand in recent years.

The Regals women's doubles team walked away as silver medal winners in the "C" Flight, bouncing back from losses in two of their first three matches before reeling off three straight wins to make it to the "C" final.

Lam and Watkins lost to Chloe Jakob/Abbey Wigle (Leamington), knocked off Danielle Goodall/Chloe Leguard (Thames High School), and were beaten by Naomi Wu/Janelle Tung (YRAA) to start their experience in Windsor.

Sliding into the "C" Flight, the local girls swept past Abby Brown/Madalyne Bandenberg (St Dominic - Bracebridge), Autumn Hamilton/Sara Underwood (Pain Court) and Helen Qian/Grace Gong (CISAA) in successive games.

Their run would finally come to an end, coming full circle, of sorts. The team of Jakob and Wigle that had defeated Lam and Watkins way back in round one did it a second time in the "C" Flight final.

Playing up one age bracket, the Lo-Ellen Park Knights duo of Amelina Iturregui/Ethan Rogers garnered some valuable experience in making their first trek to the all-Ontario high school championships.

The Lo-Ellen reps dropped their opening matches to Ethan Luo/Alyssa Wong (TDCAA) and Frank Man/Saki Liu (Trinity College - Port Hope), before being relegated to the consolation bracket with a loss to Cloey Brigham/Kyler Gannon representing the Atikokan Voyageurs.

Iturregui and Rogers will have to wait until the 2019 OFSAA Championships to register their first victory at this level after being ousted by Eric Van den Boogaard/Olivia Vermeer from Smithville Christian High School in their final encounter.

Making her first appearance at OFSAA, Keighley Gauthier of Lasalle Secondary started off well enough, besting Melissa Duong of Holy Cross in Kingston in round one.

That would be the last time she would taste victory, however, as Aditi Mahajan (Hayden Secondary - Burlington), Violet Hipkin (Thomas A Stewart - Peterborough) and Shankari Sivachandran (RH King Academy - Toronto) all got the better of Gauthier.

SDSSAA athletes who have medalled or captured consolation titles in the past decade or so have included:

2014 - Michelle Koslowskyj (Sacré Coeur)
Ladies Singles - Bronze - Flight "C"

2011 - Owen Kurvits (Lasalle)
Men's Singles - Bronze - Flight "A"

2011 - Karolyne Blain/Josh Demoré (Macdonald-Cartier)
Mixed Doubles - Bronze - Flight "C"

2010 - Karolyne Blain/Josh Demoré (Macdonald-Cartier)
Mixed Doubles - Gold - Flight "C"

2009 - Veronyk Wilson/Patrick Michel (Collège Notre-Dame)
Mixed Doubles - Antique Bronze - Flight "A"

2009 - Adam Constantineau/Justin Richardson (Macdonald-Cartier)
