Mike McCue back on the podium in Calgary
2018-05-10
by Randy Pascal

If not for being seeded on the wrong side of the draw, local squash pro Michael McCue might well have duplicated his silver medal performance from one year ago at the Canadian Squash Championships.

Instead, McCue will have to be content with a second straight visit to the podium, earning bronze at the 2018 tournament in Calgary earlier this month. The local product downed Albertan Brett Schille in round one (11-2, 11-2, 11-4), before bouncing Cameron Seth 12-10, 11-13, 11-6, 11-1.

This marked the second straight year that McCue and Seth would face each other at nationals, the Lockerby Composite graduate eliminating the native of Fergus (Ontario) in the opening round in 2017 (11-8, 11-9, 11-0).

Through to the Final Four in back to back years, McCue would meet up with top seed Nick Sachvie in one of two semi-finals, beaten in three sets, 8-11, 7-11, 6-11.

Sliding into the bronze medal affair, McCue rebounded from a slow start to outlast Shawn De Lierre 5-11, 11-7, 12-10, 11-8, placing third in the country as the dust settled in Calgary.

After losing to McCue in a five set semi-final marathon last May, Andrew Schnell proved unstoppable in 2018, sweeping past Sachvie 11-8, 11-6, 11-7 in the gold medal affair.

Schnell would navigate his way through four rounds of competition while dropping just a single set, that to De Lierre in the semis.
