A volleyball reset before provincials
2018-03-08
by Randy Pascal

The Northern Chill 17U girls paid a price for their prosperity.

After capturing silver medals at a tournament in January, the local team found themselves vaulted to the championship ranks as Bugarski Cup play rolled around last month. One senses there is a period of adjustment that will be required, as the Sudbury crew went winless in their first tournament at the higher level in Barrie.

Pool play served notice of what was to come as the Chill dropped a 9-25, 16-25 decision to the ThunderCats from Richmond Hill, falling to 0-2 with a 9-25, 23-25 loss to the Georgian Cubs (Barrie).

A matchup with another winless crew did not help matters as the Scarborough Titans Integrated edged the Chill, 25-21, 27-29, 15-8. The northern reps would again force a third and deciding set in their final encounter, before losing 25-18, 18-25, 3-15 to the Leaside Lightning.

The team that includes Dara Desrochers, Jayden Rivers, Ryann Hudson, Taylor Bailey, Jaime Schweyer, Mallory Frantz, Sydney Koehler, Erin Gaffney, Kate Dugdale and coach Kevin Wiseman will now prepare for provincial championships slated for the weekend of April 13th to 15th, in Kitchener-Waterloo.
