Canadians dominate, taking the next step up the ladder in 2014
2013-07-31
by Randy Pascal

The Sudbury Canadians have finally reached the pinnacle of Ontario Women's Soccer League competition.

The Canadians picked up a pair of wins on the weekend, improving their 2013 record to an impressive 14-0-2 in the Regional Premier grouping and earning their spot in Senior Provincial grouping next year as the Provincial Central and South divisions combine into one elite ten-team loop.

Given that the Canadians averaged more than four goals a game this summer, outscoring their opponents 66-15 over the course of their sixteen game schedule, this move up the ladder will hopefully provide some much-needed additional competition for a very talented group of local ladies.

The Canadians clinched first place thanks to a weekend sweep of the Aurora Stingers, recording back to back shutouts of 1-0 and 7-0 over the last place team. After netting the only goal of the game on Saturday, Serena San Cartier followed up with a hat-trick the next day.

Karolyne Blain and Rachel Leck chipped in with two goals apiece, with keeper Ashley Bechard helping her team to their fifth and sixth shutouts of the season.

Playing in the Senior Provincial loop in 2014 would be a godsend in terms of challenging the Canadians crew, with the likes of Kristen Boujos (graduate of Cal-State Fullerton), Laura Gosse (senior with Central Michigan), Heather MacDougall (graduate of St Bonaventure), Cassandre van Bakel (2nd team CIS all-star) and Eilish McConville (former CIS player of the year) dotting the top of the scoring race in the two provincial groupings this year.

The 2013 edition of the Sudbury Canadians team included Daniella Febbraro, Emily Villeneuve, Rachel Leck, Serena San Cartier, Madison Beaudry, Tiffany Johnson, Karolyne Blain, Jennifer Richardson, Davianna Graham, Sarah Mulvenna, Tatum Hurley, Kyla Pettigrew, Ashley Bechard, Cloe Lacasse, Erin Watters, Tamara Johnson and Courtney Smith.

Head coach Frank Malvaso heads up the team staff, with Ted Leck (assistant coach), Manon Lacasse (manager) and Donna Leck (assistant manager) all lending their support.
