Sudbury Storm girls just keep on winning
2024-04-03

The old saying in sporting circles suggests that "you can only beat what's in front of you".

Taking that to heart, the Sudbury U14 Storm girls have now mowed down six consecutive opponents in OBL (Ontario Basketball League) play, gradually working their way up the ranks with provincial championships right around the corner.

On Easter Sunday at the HoopDome (in Toronto), the Storm slipped past the Mississauga Monarchs 48-43, improving to 6-0 later in the day with a 54 -35 triumph over the Belleville Spirits.

The opening encounter would see the Sudbury scoring parade paced by the trio of Ellie Sauve (16), Sunny Dunlop (11) and Mattia Mullen (10), with Kyra Lefebvre, Sophie Roy and Sophie Loiselle cleaning up on the boards and Mila Beljo checking in with some timely threes.

The locals enjoyed a little more breathing room in game two as Sauve went off for 27 points, with Mullen (10) and Dunlop (8) chipping in as needed.

Rebounding was again key, with Sophie Roy nabbing ten, along with efficient ball distribution as Beatrice Moulton recorded five assists, assisting the Sudbury efforts in the win.

Defensively, Sophie Loiselle and Avery Smith were front and centre, as is so often the case for this very well-rounded squad.

The focus for the Storm now shifts to the all-Ontario tournament (April 26th-28th), with the possibility that the team could climb as high as Divison II play.
