St Benedict juniors roll at Mitch Lalonde Memorial Tournament
2023-12-12

The St Benedict Bears junior boys basketball team just keep rolling along.

The talented young crew picked up their second tournament win of the year, blitzing the competition at the Mitch Lalonde Memorial hosted at Lasalle Secondary last weekend.

No team could come closer than twenty points away as St Benedict reeled off four straight wins, capping things off with a 67-45 triumph in the final over the Lo-Ellen Park Knights.

While tournament MVP Sullivan Smith was in fine form in the gold medal affair (25 pts; seven rebounds; six steals) and the Bears were getting their expected contributions from the likes of Bradley Cothill (8 pts), Ajani Rubic (eight rebounds) and Ethan Uloghobui (12 rebounds), it was Holden Beange who would take control in the final quarter of play.

Netting all of his 14 team's points in the final eight minutes (a trio of threes + a FG), Beange provided another glaring example of just how deep this roster is.

The eventual champs opened the tournament with a 58-33 win over the St Charles College Cardinals as Smith showed the way with 19 points, with Bradley Cothill and Keegan Adair adding 11 apiece.

Four players would hit double digits in game two as the Bears sprinted their way to a 91-22 decision over the Macdonald-Cartier Panthères, a victory in which Cothill, Smith, Michael Folino and Adair combined for 55 points.

St Benedict stopped the Lasalle Lancers 59-35 in the semis, a 19 point performance by Cothill the obvious highlight, with Smith adding 15 points and Dylan Nelson chipping in with ten.

The senior boys draw would see the Lasalle Lancers emerge as the class of the field, the host school thumping the Franco-Cité Patriotes 97-30 in the final.

A three point contest that was part of the tournament also went the way of the Lancers as Tyrone Johnson (senior) and Ryder Hewlett (junior) claimed bragging rights for their respective teams.
