Colton Cooke good for three goals as Impact pick up a win and a tie
2023-07-17

Not every single young athlete will want to play in the highest of leagues, every single time.

For the first time ever in GSSC (Greater Sudbury Soccer Club) history, the group find themselves fielding two boys teams in the same age bracket: U15 - with the first squad entered into the TOSL (Toronto Soccer League) while the second competes in the HDSL (Huronia District Soccer League).

A one-time member of the former, it is with the latter team that Isaac Contois thrives - and most enjoys his soccer outings.

"I find that I have a little more freedom from my coaches in this league, because it's a bit easier," said the 15 year-old junior at Lasalle Secondary School who has four goals to his credit this summer.

"I have my friends here too, like my buddy Colton (leading scorer Colton Cooke - 11 goals) who I recruited to the team."

"I get the ball a lot more and I have time to figure out if I can work on my skills or pass it around," added Contois. "In years before, I would get the ball and pass it right away."

The Impact U15 boys hosted North Simcoe FC for a pair of games on the weekend, tripling the visitors 3-1 on Saturday as Cooke scored twice, with Joseph Leduc adding the other, and then playing to a 1-1 draw on Sunday as Cooke added his third of the weekend.

With a record of 5-2-1, the team seems to be dealing well with a mid-season tactical change that impacted Contois, as well as a few others.

"We were playing a different formation where I played left mid (midfielder), but we moved to a 4-3-3 so I had to play left wing, which I do prefer a lot more," he said. "At left mid, it was a lot more in the middle whereas now, I find I am more in between the middle and the front."

"That makes it easier for me," Contois added. "I can run forward and get more chances to score. When I was left mid, I focused on passing and had to run up, back, up, back."

The GSSC reps will enjoy a weekend off before hosting the Orillia Lighting at home, with Contois and company looking for a little retribution after dropping a 2-1 decision about a month ago on the shores of Lake Simcoe.

"There was not much of a difference today, not much moise, but usually when we play at home, we get a lot more noise," noted Contois. The team closes out the summer of 2023 with a final home encounter against Muskoka United (August 12th) and one final trip on the 26th, with a rematch with North Simcoe on tap to wrap up their schedule.

The remainder of the Impact U15 HDSL roster features Beckham Gagne, Pierce Rothwell, Mathieu Lebrun, Thomas Dzivy, Jonah Budd, Carter Cantin, Joel Linton, Hadi Najem, Mateo Cacciotti, Massimo Montini, Kaidin McFarlane, Brayden Sartor, Zachary Fricker, Ahmeed Adeleye, Nathan MacIsaac and head coach Matthew Sartor.
