St Charles lads on a soccer roll, yet again
2023-05-16

Looking back, the Lasalle Lancers may have done no favours to the seven remaining senior boys soccer Premier Division entries when they upset the 2-1 in their season opening encounter a few weeks back.

Since that time, the defending champs have reeled off five straight wins, outscoring their opponents 20-0. Last Thursday, the Cards bounced the St Benedict Bears from the ranks of the undefeated, blanking their SDCSB rivals 4-0 on goals from Nathan Cranston (2), Oscar Kunkar and Manzo Shimizu.

While the Bears were not at 100%, with Paolo Grossi sitting out a one game suspension and Dylan Nelson out with an illness, there was little doubt the Cardinals were intent on sending a message.

That was even more clear on Monday as St Charles thumped the Lockerby Vikings 7-0, with both Shimizu and Cranston netting two goals each and keeper Alex Chartier extending a very impressive shutout streak.

Oscar Kunkar, Roy Salarin and Joe Gouchie rounded out the scoring for SCC, the lads ensured of earning a first round playoff bye.

Meanwhile, the playoff hopes of the Vikes could be in danger after dropping a 3-2 decision to the Bishop Carter Gators on Tuesday, with Anthony Bertrand handling all of the scoring for BAC, who entered the game deadlocked in the standings with Lockerby, both teams sitting with four points apiece.

In Girls Open Premier play, the Collège Notre-Dame Alouettes and Lasalle Lancers played to a scoreless draw, with both Marie-Leslie Kouadio (CND) and Isabelle Roy (LAS) holding the fort as the last line of defence for their respective units.

One final score from the young men on Monday: a hat-trick from Maliq Olanrewaju helped propel the Lo-Ellen Park Knights to a 6-2 win over Lasalle. Jaeden Dulaney, Andre Sousa and Liam Conlin also hit paydirt for LOE while Nour Alzahran and Sylas Asare-Corbiere replied in a losing cause for the Lancers.

Quarter-final action is set for Friday (May 19th - Girls) and Tuesday (May 23rd).
