Vehkala explodes with a five-point outing
2023-01-06

Despite the arrival of some key reinforcements for the opposition, the Sudbury U16 AAA Nickel Capitals still secured the upper hand in their season series with the Sudbury U18 AAA Nickel Capitals, doubling their SMHA brethren 6-3 Wednesday night at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.

Sault Ste Marie native Coulson Bell paced the attack for the winners with a two goal effort, with Max Campbell, Cameron Vehkala, Cale Prpic and Bryson Villeneuve adding one goal apiece - and Vehkala completing a five-point night with four assists along the way as well.

Dominic Morris tallied twice for the U18 crew, whose scoring was rounded out by Noah Kohan, who is back in the Great North U18 AAA League, along with teammate Carson Crane, with both having enjoyed a solid taste of NOJHL action as members of the Greater Sudbury Cubs.

Nick Marson, also from the Sault, picked up the win in net while A.J. Borrelli (yep - you guessed it - from Sault Ste Marie) was tagged with the loss.

With a record of 9-5-0-1 (19 points), the U16 AAA Caps are deadlocked with the Kapuskasing Flyers (9-3-1-0), trailing the league-leading Soo Jr Greyhounds (12-1-0-0) by five points.

Coach Jordan Cheechoo and company (U16 AAA) are in for another solid test this weekend, battling the North Bay U18 AAA Trappers (8-5-0-0) Saturday night at the McCrory Complex, with the Trappers back in action on Sunday afternoon, facing the Sudbury U18 AAA squad (4-12-0-0), who would love to overtake the New Liskeard Cubs (5-10-0-0) in sixth place.

The U18 locals are in North Bay on Saturday, facing the last place North Bay U16 AAA Trappers (2-9-1-1).
