Divisionals are done; SCC sprint kayakers off to provincials in Ottawa
2022-08-08
Some members of the Sudbury Canoe Club sprint canoe/kayak team are making the most of their competitive opportunities this summer.

The quartet of Evan Volpini, Cole Macey, Lucas Gilpin and Mateo Volpini have all successfully advanced through the Western Ontario Divisionals, with the foursome leaving for Ottawa later this week to take part in the Ontario Cup Ontario Championships.

In fact, that same grouping will also be gone from August 23rd to the 28th as the St-Maurice River in Shawinigan (PQ) plays host to the Canoe Kayak Canada National Sprint Championships.

The Junior Men's K2 tandem of Evan Volpini and Lucas Gilpin finished third in Welland in the 200m sprint in late July, the pair bringing aboard Mateo Volpini and Cole Macey for a second bronze medal performance, this in the Junior Men's K4 500m distance.

On a solo level, Cole Macey accounted for the only individual bronze medal, sliding into third place in the U18 Men's K1 200m final, with Lucas Gilpin three slots back in sixth place.

Fourth place finishers included Mateo Volpini (U16 Men's K1 200m final) as well as the tandem of Evan Volpini and Lucas Gilpin (Jr Men's K2 - 500m & 1000m events).

Julien Turpin partnered with Mateo Volpini to compete in the U16 Men's K2 500m race, finishing seventh, with the SCC also welcoming along the Timmins duo of Chantal and Nicole Kulkula for the WOD meet.
