Medals and more at OFSAA Track
2012-06-10
by Randy Pascal

All eyes, from a Sudbury and area perspective, may have been on Ecole Secondaire Hanmer speedster Ashley Huard at the 2012 OFSAA Track & Field Championships in Brockville, but she certainly wasn't the only local catching attention.

A year after bursting on to the provincial scene with a bronze medal performance in the 100m at the all-Ontario high school championships, Huard did one better, capturing a silver medal and solidifying her times in the marquee event.

Huard qualified for the finals third overall, running comfortably in 11.88 seconds, and lowered that just a touch, down to 11.65, in finishing second in the final. The grade 12 student has indicated that she intends to return for a fifth and final year of secondary competition in 2013.

Meanwhile, Lo-Ellen junior thrower Keegan Moore provided a second local medal, capturing third place in the javelin with a toss of 51.74 metres. The result bettered slightly his throw of 51.32 at the SDSSAA championships that established a new record last month at the Laurentian track.

And though the field was limited, kudos go out to spirited Horizon wheelchair athlete Jennie Poirier-Rochon, who took home top spot in the 800m race with a time of 4:07.00, establishing a new record in the process.

A couple of local pole vaulters narrowly missed the podium, with Lo-Ellen senior John Kosar (3.95m) and Lockerby midget Philip Miller (3.05m) both finishing fourth.

The senior boys high jump competition produced some solid local results, with Sven Trodel of Lockerby and Brandon Mask of Lasalle both clearing the bar at 1.90 metres, finishing 5th and in a tie for 6th respectively.

Coming off an outstanding 200m final at NOSSA, Lasalle's Brandon Shirk was at his best this weekend in his trademark 400m run, qualifying 4th for the final in 49.30 seconds and placing seventh in the final in 49.55 seconds.

Manitoulin Secondary produced a pair of top ten finishes, both in the long jump, with Andrew Argall (Sr Boys - 6th - 6.65m) and Kennedy Lanktree (Midget Girls - 5th - 4.84m) both placing well within the top third of their field.
