There must be something about large multi-sport games that just seems to bring out the best in Sudbury athletes. Less than a year after the likes of Devon Kershaw, Rebecca Johnston and Tessa Bonhomme did the region proud with their performances at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Team Ontario members are repeating the performance in Halifax.

Erika Kiviaho (ringette) and Michael McCue (squash) both came through with flying colours over the past two to three days, as the medal haul heading to northern Ontario continues to rise.

After knocking off Saskatchewan 5-2 in semi-final action, Kiviaho and mates needed overtime to better the Alberta side, winning Gold with an 8-7 triumph. Samantha Nosal and Alex Bateman scored twice each to lead the way for Ontario, with Kaylee Whitcroft, Kelsey Youldon and Sammy McIntosh adding singles.

Jocelyn Stock replied with a pair of goals for Alberta, while Alexandra Saizew, Shaundra Bruvall, Carolina Romeo, Jillian Basterash and Danielle Pronovost tallied once each. "It was so loud, you could barely hear the whistle and the shotclock," said Kiviaho in an email sent late Friday evening.

"It is so rewarding that after all this time and all our work, we were able to do what we set out to do from the beginning," she added. "I'm just sad that it's over now - it was an amazing experience."

Meanwhile, over at St Mary's University, site of the squash competition, McCue and the Ontario men could not have been more dominating. The team cruised to Gold Thursday night, posting a flawless 24-0 mark through round robin and playoff action.

McCue was joined on the team by long-time junior rival Tyler Osborne of Kingston, as well as Joshua Sekhar and Cameron Seth. Facing British Columbia in the finals, Seth swept past Mackenzie Foster (3-0), Sekhar knocked off Michael Thompson (3-1), Osborne bested Tyler Olsen (3-1), while McCue went the limit in capping off a near perfect week with a five-set win over Zachary Leman.
