Anmar Wolves run roughshod over Sons
2010-02-01
by Randy Pascal

The Sudbury Anmar "AAA" Bantam Wolves seem intent on turning a cross-town rivalry to shambles. The squad punctuated a three game weekend sweep of the Nickel City Sons in Levack on Sunday, embarassing the home side 11-0, and outscoring their NOBHL rivals 23-1 in racking up three more wins. The impressive performance also clinched first place for the Wolves, the first time since 2006-07 that the SMHA representatives have captured the regular season title.

The Anmar Bantams feature a very balanced attack, with Brandon Langella and Michael Laidley both firing hat-tricks in the series finale. Adding one goal apiece were Danny Desrochers, Josh Moore, Brenden Pheasant, Scott Sirkka and Tyler Bertuzzi in support of the second shutout of the weekend for netminder Joel Horodziejczyk.

Sudbury opened with an 8-0 win over the Sons Saturday afternoon, following up with a 4-1 victory in the most closely contested encounter between the local "AAA" organizations. Tyler Bertuzzi hit the ice in full stride, registering a natural hat-trick as part of a four-goal performance, while Dustin Varey, Brenden Pheasant, Brandon Langella and Charlie Venedam added singles.

League-leading scorer Josh Moore came alive in game two, drilling a hat trick to close out the weekend with an eight point advantage over teammate Ryan Erickson. Charlie Venedam picked up the final goal for the victors while Jordan Piette proved to be the only Nickel City skater who could solve the Sudbury goaltending tandem on Saturday or Sunday.

In other league action, the North Bay Hilltop Variety Blades also picked up three wins on the road, beating Timmins to move into a fourth place tie with the Eagles. Regular season action winds down next weekend as the Soo Thunder play a three game set in North Bay while Timmins plays a troika against the Sudbury powerhouse at the Carmichael Arena.

The following weekend will see the playoffs kickoff, as the 4th and 5th place teams stage a best of three elimination round, with the winners moving on to face the Wolves in a best of five affair. Likewise, the Sons will travel to Sault Ste Marie for NOBHL semi-final action later in February as the league looks to crown a winner in anticipation of the Ontario Championships taking place from March 22nd to 27th in Ottawa.
