Lady Wolves in Scarborough and more
2010-01-27
by Randy Pascal

No championship banners, but still some pretty solid results as four of the Sudbury Lady Wolves teams recently took part in the 26th Annual Scarborough Sharks Tournament. Following are the game summaries (and goal scorers, if provided) for the local entries:

Peewee "BB" Lady Wolves

Coach Ian Reinhardt was hopeful that his Peewee "BB" Lady Wolves might encounter some of the stronger teams in the province and this tournament provided just that, although not until the championship encounter. Sudbury finished in first place in Pool "B", posting a record of 2-0-1 in the eight team division.

The Lady Wolves opened with a 1-0 win over the Durham West Lightning as Brittany Reinhardt provided all of the offensive support that goaltender Sabrina Smith would need in picking up the win between the pipes. Missed opportunities prove costly in game two as the Lady Wolves and Kanata Rangers play to a 1-1 tie, with Josée Scott netting the only goal for the locals.

First place in preliminary play was secured when the Lady Wolves blanked the Leaside Wildcats 2-0 on goals by Brittany Reinhardt and Ashley Mckerral, with Sabrina Smith earning her second straight whitewash. A strong effort in the semi-finals for the local crew, defeating the Etobicoke Dolphins 3-0 and earning a berth in the finals.

Josée Scott powered the Sudbury attack with a two goal effort, Melissa Kingsley added a single and Zoe Piquette chalks up the shutout as the Lady Wolves move on to face the Smith Falls Cubs. On the other side of the draw, the Cubs were clearly the class of the field, posting four straight wins while outscoring the opposition 15-0.

Sudbury manages to keep things close until late, tied at one with five minutes remaining before a pair of penalty calls prove costly, with Smith Falls chalking up a 4-1 win. Melissa Kingsley managed the only goal for the local girls, who next compete in tournament play when the local association hosts the 15th Girls Snowflake Challenge from February 18th to 21st.

Intermediate "A" Lady Wolves

After picking up Gold at a pair of tournaments before Christmas, the Sudbury Intermediate Lady Wolves settled for Silver in their first event of the 2010 calendar, falling to the Walkerton Capitals 1-0 in the final. Sudbury looked impressive in stringing together four consecutive victories, downing the Ottawa Ice (3-1), waterloo Ravens (2-1) and Sacrborough Sharks (2-1) in round robin play before slipping past the St Catherines Chaos (2-1) in semi-final action.

Novice "B" Lady Wolves

The Sudbury Novice ladies continue to gauge the competition leading up to provincials in April, finishing with a mark of 1-2 at the Sharks tournament. Sudbury opened with a 2-1 loss at the hands of the Oshawa Lady Generals, with Danika Godin accounting for the only goal for the locals. The team rebounds to squeak past the Kanata Rangers 1-0 as Mireille Kingsley records the shutout and Lauren Hancock nets the game's only goal.

Needing a win to advance to the championship final, the Lady Wolves proved no match for an impressive Cambridge Roadrunners squad, losing 4-1 as Makayla Gratton closes out the scoring for head coach Murray Hancock and company. Cambridge would go on to claim the tournament bragging rights, knocking off Oshawa by a final count of 2-1 in the championship encounter.

Peewee "B" Lady Wolves

And finally, the Sudbury Peewee "B" ladies advance to the semi-finals but no further, leaving town with a .500 mark after winning a pair of games and losing two as well. The Lady Wolves dropped a 2-1 decision to the Lakeshore Lightning, picked things up to register back to back wins over the Barrie Sharks (3-2) and Etobicoke Dolphins (4-0), before being sent packing by the Lightning.

Lakeshore trimmed the Wolves 2-1 for a second time, capping off their tournament with a 3-0 win over Whitby in the championship final.

And there is no break in sight for the Sudbury contingent as the Midget "A" and Bantam "B" head to the nation's capital for the 30th Annual NGHA (Nepean Girls Hockey Association) Tournament while the Bantam "A" ladies are in Cobourg, taking part in the west Northumberland Wild Winter Classic 2010 - both set for this coming weekend.
