Late rally sinks Jr Wolves
2010-01-21
by Randy Pascal

Just minutes away from registering a third straight win, the Sudbury Kal Tire Jr Wolves watched it disappear in a span of 47 seconds Wednesday night at the McClelland Arena. With the Blind River Beavers providing the opposition, the Wolves took a 4-3 lead into the third period, maintaining that advantage down to the dying minutes.

That's when erstwhile Manitoulin Islander forward Brandon Ominika went to work, knotting the game at four at 16:31 of the third. Less than a minute later, Trent Krueger drills the game-winner and by the time Ominika caps off his hat trick with an empty net marker just ten seconds shy of the final horn, the Jr Wolves have seen victory # 17 slip through thier grasp.

Instead, it's the Beavers who snap a three game winless skid, one that came directly on the heels of a ten game winning streak that ran over the holidays. Things did not look good for the visitors early on as Chris Kangas opened the scoring and Shawn Allen added a pair of first period markers, lifting Sudbury to a 3-0 lead after just twenty minutes of play.

Blind River outscores the homeside 3-1 in the second, making things interesting as Nathan MacLeod, Ominika, with his first, and Duncan Green solve Sudbury netminder Nicholas McMullen. Chris Pontes countered with one for the Jr Wolves, who fell short of extending their winning ways to three games for the first time since early November.

Coach Dave Clancy and the boys will have a week or so to lick their wounds as they see action again next Wednesday, welcoming the North Bay Trappers to the McClelland Arena at 7:30 p.m. The Jr Wolves remain in third place in the East Division of the NOJHL, thirteen points back of the Trappers and eleven ahead of the Temiscaming Royals.
