Wolves and Storm exchange defensemen 2010-01-10 by Randy Pascal
A back end shake-up for the Sudbury Wolves as the trade deadline nears, with the local juniors shipping 19 year old defenseman Chris Van
Laren along with a pair of second round picks (2011 and 2012) to the Guelph Storm in return for 18 year old rearguard Ben Chiarot and
two draft selections (6th rd in 2011; 11th rd in 2012).
Chiarot, a 4th round draft pick of the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2007 OHL Entry Draft, is expected to add a little more toughness to the Sudbury
blueline. The former second round OHL selection stands 6'3" and weighs in at some 220 pounds, accumulating 106 penalty minutes and posting a very
respectable + 6 plus/minus rating with Guelph.
""We are extremely excited to acquire Ben Chiarot" notes Wolves Coach/GM Mike Foligno. "Ben gives us more size and toughness and adds more
offensive skill to our blueline. He is an outstanding penalty-killer and he will be one of our top defencemen this year and next." Chiarot has 13 points
to date this year (4G - 9A) while Van Laren leaves Sudbury with seven points to his credit (1G - 6A).
Chiarot is expected to join the team for practice on Monday, donning a Wolves game jersey for the first time on Friday night when Sudbury welcomes
the Oshawa Generals to town.
