Silver Stick eye opener for Anmar Wolves
2010-01-09
by Randy Pascal

The coaching staff of the Sudbury Anmar Bantam "AAA" Wolves took one look at the round robin schedule of the International Silver Stick Tournament and knew they were in tough. The opposition did not disappoint, as the Wolves could manage just a single tie in four games in Port Huron (Michigan), battling some of the top bantam-aged teams in North America.

Sudbury opened play on Thursday, building up a 3-2 first period lead over the Florida Everblades before eventually dropping a 6-3 decision to their American counterparts. Dustin Varey netted a pair of goals for coach Steve Gallo and company, with Danny Desrochers adding a solo marker.

Game two is an even tougher pill to swallow as the Bantam Wolves relinquish a 4-3 lead heading to the third, beaten 5-4 by the Pittsburgh Hornets. Charlie Venedam, Tyler Bertuzzi, Josh Moore and Danny Desrochers find the back of the net for Sudbury as the Hornets score two goals less than a minute apart midway through the third to post the come-from-behind victory.

A humbling experience Saturday evening as the Wolves trail Detroit Honeybaked 2-1 early in the second when the wheels come off for the local squad. Honeybaked scores seven unanswered goals over the final 28 minutes minutes, blasting the Wolves 9-1 in the process. Ryan Erickson made things momentarily interesting just 51 seconds into the middle stanza, drawing Sudbury to within one before the Detroit powerhouse cranked it up a notch.

With nothing more than pride on the line, the Anmar Wolves manage to secure a 4-4 tie with the York Simcoe Express, facing long-time teammate Andrew Lefebvre between the pipes for the Express. Varey, Bertuzzi, Brandon Langella and Steven Green account for the Sudbury scoring, as the team prepares to return to NOBHL action next weekend with a trek to Sault Ste Marie.

As tournament play winds down in Port Huron, semi-final action on Sunday morning finds an all-Detroit matchup as Honeybaked battles Little Caesars while the Toronto Marlboros and Welland Tigers face off in the remaining encounter. The championship final is slated for Sunday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. at the McMorran Place Arena.
