Wolves remain flawless against the Battalion 2010-01-09 by Randy Pascal
A pair of goals just 26 seconds apart late in the second period proved to be the difference as the Sudbury Wolves maintained their season-long
domination of the Brampton Battalion, doubling the visitors 4-2 at the Sudbury Arena Friday night. The win, Sudbury's fourth straight against their
Central Division rival this year, moves the Wolves into a seventh place tie with the Battalion.
The teams opened the contest trading first period goals as Eric O'Dell, Jared Staal and John Kurtz executed a picture perfect tic-tac-toe
passing play just four minutes in, culminating with Kurtz' 22nd goal of the season. Thomas Stajan drew Brampton even much later in the frame, taking
a pretty cross crease pass from Sam Carrick and tipping the puck past Sudbury netminder Alain Valiquette.
The teams scored in bunches in the middle frame, starting with the home side as Marcus Foligno got his stick into great position to accept a
centering feed from Steven Reese as the Buffalo draft pick scores for a third straight game. But Brampton wastes little time responding as veteran
Scott Tanski banks a shot off the shoulder of Valiquette and in just 37 seconds later and the teams are tied yet again.
It would stay that way until the final minute of the second period when Kain Allicock circles the net and directs a shot on goaltender Patrick
Killeen. The rebound comes directly out to Eddy Rinke who roofs his 6th goal of the year into the yawning cage. And with time ticking down,
John McFarland burst down the left wing on a two on one and nails the top corner with 2.1 seconds remaining on the clock, putting the Wolves up by
two heading to the third.
A fairly solid final period for coach Mike Foligno and company, who surrender 16 shots to the Battalion in the last twenty minutes, but manage to
keep quality scoring chances at a minimum, posting a decent much-needed bounce back victory after a less than stellar 5-2 loss to the Niagara Ice Dogs
a week ago Saturday.
