Mitchell Byrne enjoys game to remember
2010-01-03
by Randy Pascal

A pair of victories over their regional rivals in the past five days have pulled the Nickel City Sons to within one point of the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves in Great North Midget League standings. Wednesday night at the Countryside Arena, the Sons scored three unanswered third period goals to break a 4-4 deadlock, clipping the Wolves 7-4.

Draft eligible forward Mitchell Byrne enjoyed a game to remember, scoring four times, including a natural hat trick midway through the first, with the trio of goals netted within a span of just two minutes and fifteen seconds. Veteran Sebastien Leroux also chipped in big time, rifling the final two goals as Nickel City evened their '09-'10 record against Sudbury at 2-2.

Alex Battistelli picked up the remaining Sons' marker on the power play, one of four goals that Brent Battistelli's troops registered with the man advantage. Catlin Cargill replied with a pair of goals for the Nickel Capital Wolves, with Steven Johnston and Gabriel Rodrigues tallying once each.

Byrne continued his offensive heroics Saturday afternoon in Chelmsford, drilling the game winning goal with just 37 seconds remaining as Nickel City tripped up Sudbury 4-3 to complete the home and home sweep. The Sons bolted out to a 3-0 first period lead courtesy of goals from Darcy Haines, Alex Bottogoni and Sebastien Leroux only to see the Wolves fight back with three of their own.

Defenseman Michael Rouleau put Sudbury on the board midway through the second, converting on the power play and Tyler Shaw and Kyle Stasiuk drew the visitors even with goals in the final frame, setting the stage for the late game dramatics. The Nickel Capital Wolves sit third in league standings with 31 points (15-9-1-0), just one better than the Sons (14-11-1-1), but with two games in hand.

Coach Bob Johnston and company will make up one of those outings on Sunday when they travel to North Bay to face the 7th place Trappers (5-18-1-0), before enjoying a rare weekend off on the 9th and 10th of January.
