Silkscreeners complete season sweep in Girls Softball playoffs
2009-08-16
by Randy Pascal

The 2009 edition of the Sudbury Minor Girls Softball season is now history. The end of year playoff weekend got underway on Friday night at the Terry Fox Sports Complex, as the league was able complete all round robin games and championship games for the first time in three years.

Following are results by division:

Squirts

In squirt semi-final action, the Silkscreeners defeated Barrydowne Paints 8-4 while the Rastall Rebels routed SPJ 15-2, setting up a rematch of the mid-season tournament finale. In the championship affair, the Rebels scored four runs in the opening frame and cruised to a 9-3 victory.

Kasey McGuire led the Rebels with a perfect 2/2 (and a walk) afternoon with teammates Maddison Goddard and Chelsey Coutu both going 2/3, as did Angie Rumball in a losing cause for the Silkscreeners. Others members of the championship Rebels' team were: Jena Ethier, Valerie Honse, Kaitlin Zenzarin, Kyana Laprise, Hailey Coutu, Ashley Whitford, Emma Johnson, Bailey Lafortune and Sophie Laurin.

Bantams

In the bantam semi-final game, the Manpower Maniacs needed an extra inning to upend Hite Services 13-12 in a highly entertaining outing. But in the final, the strong offensive production and defensive skills of Northern Sports Photography allowed the top-rated team (from round robin play) to easily defeat the Manpower gals 20-6.

Courtney Wabegijig led the NSP girls with a perfect 3/3 effort at the plate, with Céline Mallais adding a three-run HR while Meagan McCullagh went 2/3 in a losing cause for the Maniacs. Other members of the winning team included: Emily Gibson, Lisa Dickson, Maddy Walsh, Summer Corbiere, Sophie Lamoureux, Ally Vaillancourt, Courtney Halverson and Morgan St Onge.

Midgets

In midget semi-final battles, Patrick Roofing defeated Auto Buff Used Cars 13-12 while Bristol Machine got the better of Toppers Pizza 11-7. Bristol gets out the gates quickly in the championship affair, scoring early while their stingy defense shuts out Patrick Roofing for the first four frames.

In the end, the Bristol gals took the championship 10-4 as Holly Rainsberry, Jessica Honse and Emma Meunier all register a pair of base hits in sparking the Bristol attack. Jill Zinn countered for Patrick, going 2/2 with a walk in a losing cause. The remainder of the Bristol 2009 lineup featured: Kelsey McGlade, Karly Milne, Brogan Roy, Stephanie Fontaine, Shawnee Commanda, Jennifer Roy, Mallory Gunn and Cassandra McCutcheon.

In other fastball notes involving the fairer sex, an attempt is being made to revive a ladies fastball league for players 18 years of age and over for the 2010 season. Interested young ladies who are graduating from the SMGSA as well as former players looking to continue in the sport are asked to show their interest, emailing Roger Legendre at "er_legendre@sympatico.ca" with your contact information.
