Dahlvick tosses one-hitter as regular season winds down 2009-08-11 by Randy Pascal
The rain out schedule continued Monday night in the Rick McDonald Memorial Fastball League, with a pair of games
taking place in Azilda. In the opener, the Dog House North Stars scored early and went on to rout the last place
Athletics 11-0.
Jordy "Swede" Dalhvick (5-0) went the distance, giving up but one hit in the second frame and striking out nine.
Steve Sabourin paced the offense with a 3/4 performance that included a three run homer in the first inning,
teammate Junior Ilnitski pounded a pair of hits while Eric Legendre broke up the no-hit bid early.
John Ainsley (0-5) suffered the loss, surrendering 10 hits, five walks and fanning six batters. In the nightcap,
the Parry Island Hawks were hard pressed to hold on for a 5-4 victory over the Pickerel River Cardinals,
despite leading 5-1 in the late innings.
Prior to the start of the game, the Hawks were presented with the Commissioner's Cup, emblamatic of regular season
supremacy and, more importantly, a bye to the second round semi-finals. Al Guenette (4-1) started the contest and
was relieved in the seventh by Percy Tobobundung.
The tandem combined to limit the Cards to six hits, issuing no free passes and striking out nine batters. Jonathan
Contin (7-6) started for Pickerel River, picked up in the fifth by reliever Alex Ashawasagai.
The Hawks knocked out seven hits against the pair, while Contin and Ashawasagain teamed up for an equal number of strikeouts.
Frank Pegahamagabow led the way for the Hawks, going 2 for 3 with Matt Tobobundung belting his fifth round
tripper of the season, trailing Todd Parsons (Hounds) by just one with one regular season game remaining.
Elwood "Squid" Ashawasagai finished 2/2 in a losing cause for the Cardinals.
League play will resume Thursday night in Garson (Lorne Brady Memorial Park) with the final two rain out games of the
regular season. Both games feature important team playoff and individual statistical implications. A four-point game at
7:00 p.m. with the Hounds facing the North Stars will decide second place in league standings.
The league batting crown is also up for grabs as the Cards' Curtis Hambly (.585) takes a slim lead over Jim Pawis (.575)
of the Hawks, with both scheduled to play on Thursday. First round quarter final action is expected to begin the
following Monday (August 17th) at Rick McDonald Memorial Park in Azilda.
