Wrestlers will head to Winter Games and XTreme Team update
2007-12-22
by Randy Pascal

In an effort to provide a more consistent approach to offering coverage for the wide variety of sports that are highlighted on SudburySports.com, we've decided to include a new feature. Bi-weekly divisional or league updates will offer a wide array of statistical tidbits, roster updates, tournament results for participating teams. Combat sports (wrestling/boxing/karate/martial arts/etc..) will be featured every second Thursday - next update is January 3rd (2008)

Ontario Winter Games qualifiers

Last weekend in Timmins, wrestlers from across the North gathered to kill two birds with one stone. Not only did the group stage the North Eastern Ontario championships at this time for all age groupings, but the meet also provided the first opportunity to earn their spot in the Ontario Winter Games which are being held on March 7th and 8th in Collingwood.

A number of local athletes managed to secure a berth on the OWG team by taking Gold in their respective weight classifications, including:

Samantha Robillard (CVDCS*)
Richard Paradis (CVDCS)
James Brebant (CVDCS)
Max Comeau (ESMC**)
Devin Jokinen (Lo-Ellen)
Mercedes Byrnes (Champlain)
*CVDCS - Chelmsford Valley District Composite School
**ESMC - Ecole Secondaire Macdonald-Cartier

In other results, wrestlers in the juvenile age grouping also competed, although the Winter Games competition is being limited to those who finish first in Cadet competition. Following are some of the remaining placings for local athletes:

Cadet Division
Sabrina Larocque (CVDCS) - bronze
Dylan Galloway (Lockerby) - bronze

Juvenile Division
Spencer Burton (CVDCS) - gold
Matt Charette (Lockerby) - gold
Sarah Hirschfeld (Sudbury Secondary) - gold
Marc Drouin (Champlain) - silver
